How to Get a Digital Certificate in Spain as a Foreigner (Resident or Non-Resident)
If you're a foreigner living in Spain—or planning to move here—getting a digital certificate (certificado digital) is one of the smartest steps you can take. Whether you're a resident or a non-resident, this secure electronic ID allows you to manage official paperwork online, saving you time, stress, and endless queues.
🔐 What Is a Digital Certificate?
A digital certificate is an encrypted file issued by Spain’s Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre (FNMT https://www.fnmt.es). It verifies your identity online and lets you interact with Spanish government services securely.
With it, you can:
File taxes with the Agencia Tributaria (https://www.agenciatributaria.es)
Access Social Security and healthcare records via Seguridad Social (https://www.seg-social.es)
Renew your residency or visa
Register as self-employed (autónomo)
Sign official documents electronically
Communicate with town halls and other public offices
👤 Who Can Apply?
Any foreigner over 18 with a valid NIE (Foreigner Identification Number) can apply. This includes:
Residents with a TIE card
Non-residents with a valid passport and NIE
EU citizens with a Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión
🧭 Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Your Digital Certificate
1. Prepare Your Browser
Use Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox (older versions) for compatibility with FNMT’s system. Stick to the same computer and browser throughout the process.
2. Request the Certificate Online (https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/en/certificados/persona-fisica/obtener-certificado-software)
Go to the FNMT website – Obtain Software Certificate and choose “Obtain Software Certificate.” Fill in your personal details (name, NIE, email) and submit the request. You’ll receive a code by email.
3. Verify Your Identity In-Person
Take your NIE/TIE and passport to an authorized office such as:
Agencia Tributaria offices (https://www.agenciatributaria.gob.es)
Social Security offices (https://www.seg-social.es)
Your local Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) – example for Benidorm
Some offices require appointments—check ahead via "Cita Previa" (https://www.sede.fnmt.gob.es/certificados/persona-fisica/obtener-certificado-software/solicitar-certificado)
4. Download the Certificate
After verification, return to the FNMT site and download your certificate using the same browser and computer.
🏖️ Why It Matters in the Costa Blanca
If you're handling property purchases, residency renewals, or tax declarations in regions like Alicante, Benidorm, or Calpe, a digital certificate streamlines everything. It’s especially useful for expats managing paperwork remotely or through legal representatives.
